Growth of Online Shopping Continues

22nd January 2013

Official figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have indicated that the growth rate of online retail sales continues to be higher than that of in-store retail, with an 11.8% increase in online shopping being seen in December. Overall, there has been a decline in retail sales of 0.1%, as high street retailers continue to struggle with the increasingly popularity of internet shopping and the increasing number of UK parcel delivery companies in operation. The start of 2013 has seen some big high street names, such as Jessops and HMV, going into administration, reflecting the continuing growth of online retail and the progressive nature of technology. Last week online-only fashion retailer, Asos, became the latest high-profile firm to report strong online sales over the Christmas period.

Increasingly, consumers are showing a preference for online shopping, finding the ability to browse from the comfort of their living rooms to be more appealing than battling their way through their local city centres. With price comparison websites offering easy methods of tracking down the best prices, and the increasingly available option of choosing cheap parcel delivery services, the growth rate of online shopping shows no signs of slowing down.
